The Great American Laughing Stock Company is a not-for-profit repertory theatre company thriving in Steamboat Springs, Colorado whose mission is to enhance and diversify the performing arts in the Yampa Valley region.

GALSCO’s dedication to artistic excellence and the human spirit invokes an environment of empowerment and creativity through the transformative power of theatre. Our goal is to touch the hearts and souls of all those living in the Yampa Valley community with the life sustaining and supporting qualities of live performance. Quoting Christian Penny, New Zealand stage director, artist, and director of the New Zealand National Drama School, “Theatre exists in the coming together to share air, the ritual of real life, ephemeral and transitory, with the very real possibility that something totally transforming will reveal itself.”

Through its commitment to the performing arts, GALSCO serves to educate area youth through exposure to arts nationally and internationally. We perform valuable human service to the greater community through entertainment and cultural development. Simply put: we do theatre outdoors, in a picnic setting, through partnerships with local performers and guest artists, to build a spirit of community. Community means theatre that touches all ages, abilities, cultures, genres from Shakespeare to Seuss, and is indelibly printed with the values of the Yampa Valley.

Originally founded in 1971, the Company was resurrected in the summer of 2005 and has continued to produce shows and youth theatre workshops each summer as part of our Piknik Theatre Festival, as well as producing shows, classes, and workshops during the school year. Led by Stuart Handloff, a director with over 45 years of theatrical experience and a Masters degree graduate of the New Zealand National Drama School, GALSCO has produced the Piknik Theatre summer repertory outdoor theatre program in the Yampa River Botanic Park, the Bud Werner Memorial Library, and other outdoor locations in Steamboat Springs, CO since 2008.
